Wish You Were Here - Volume 06 .... N4 2005: BNSF Needles Sub 03/26/05
March 26, 2005 - A day for railfanning out along the BNSF Needles Subdivision. This event was organized by Jeff Bass who runs the Image Gateway website. It is an annual event that he likes to organize for us. The 2004 event did not happen due to illness. This years event included 11 railfans including myself some of who met at Fullerton Station where we piled our gear and food into Jeff's van to head out to Cajon Pass and Barstow to get the remainder of the group. Later we met up with Dave who runs the Socalrailfan.com website. The photos begin as we head northeast along Route 66 just outside of Victorville along the BNSF Cajon Subdivision ....
We chased this stack train up route 66. The middle of the train is seen here in the morning haze near Hodge on the BNSF Cajon Sub. Finally catching up to the engine power near Lenwood. I took this through the window of the van as they slowed for a red at Lenwood After BNSF 5228 cleared Lenwood, BNSF 4113 rolled up. Jeff positioned himself between the train and I.
BNSF 5228 west was holding at Lenwood in front of our pace train. Here it is proceeding passed the control signal.

BNSF 4727 rolls by heading west out of Barstow through Lenwood. The searchlight style signals for the Eastbound control block at Lenwood BNSF 4113 gets a green signal and proceed's east. At wich time we also continue east to Barstow to meet up with 3 of the group who lodged in town the night before. As we gassed up, cleaned the windows and continued east, this UP work train was sitting on the BNSF just east of Dagget with UP 5387 shiney and new on the point. This was taken as we passed by on the 41.

Thursday before the trip it was reported that Amtrak's train # 4 - the Southwest Cheif had to set out one of it's engines at Pisgah. Apparently it had a melted rear axel on the rear truck. In the process of setting out the engine the crew rolled over a derail and did just that - derailed a car... the engine was still sitting on the siding being overlooked by a repair crew.

We had passed a parade of stopped eastbound trains, so we decided to stop at Ludlow first to take advantage of the morning light and the nice sweeping curves of the area. Here are 4 or the 11 in our group up on the rock hill. Another 3 of the 11 in our group participated in the customary name calling and finger pointing of container cars while being overtaken by butterflies in the field of wild flowers. The BNSF 4850 leads the Cadiz interchange L-CAL1163 into Ludlow.

Next through was BNSF 4116 with a nice looking manifest train trailing as they round the curve heading into the Ludlow S curves. We were made aware of two grain trains heading west and just after passing Bagdad we caught site of the first one. We pulled over on route 66 and all hopped out to get images of this train. The consist could not have been more interesting with it's Orange - Green - Orange arrangment. The Fifth engine back in the consist was this BNSF SD70Mac ... a rare visitor to Socal.

The grill on Jeff's GMC was populated with wild monarch butterflies that were swarming the desert. The BNSF engine power for their interchange train MWCLBAR came east along the outside track We turned around and headed back west to East Siberia. But we ere not in time to catch the lead of the grain train .. just the DPU as they got a red at West Siberia.
